Recovery After a Cesarean Delivery
Congratulations on your little one! A cesarean is major surgery, so your body needs extra time and care to heal. Here's how to take care of yourself and your incision.
Rest and accept help
It's easier said than done, but rest is how you heal. Let someone help with the baby, help you sit up and stand, and bring you food and water. Try not to lift anything heavier than your baby.
Care for your incision

Keep it clean and dry. Wash gently with soap and water and pat dry. Check it every day for redness, swelling, warmth, or drainage.
Help your body recover
A belly band from the hospital can make moving around more comfortable. Eat fruits, vegetables, and foods high in protein and fiber, and drink plenty of water. Ask your doctor about stool softeners.
Dress for comfort
Many moms like the mesh underwear from the hospital, or high-waisted underwear that doesn't rub the incision. Adult disposable underwear can help if bleeding is heavy.
Call your doctor right away if your incision is red, swollen, warm, or draining, if you have a fever of 100.4 F or higher, or if you soak through a pad in an hour or less. You're important too. Take it easy and give yourself time to heal.
