Strategies for Calming Your Baby
When your baby cries, they're telling you they need something. It might be simple, like hunger or tiredness, or harder to figure out. Hearing your baby cry is stressful, so it's normal to want to calm them quickly.
Respond quickly
You can't spoil a baby in the first year. The faster you respond, the less your baby needs to cry.
Check the basics
Is your baby hungry, too hot or cold, in pain, or tired? Fixing the problem often stops the crying.
Try a calming idea
Hold your baby skin to skin, rock or walk, sing softly, offer a pacifier, try a warm bath, go outside, or turn on white noise like a fan or dryer.
Take a break if you need to
It's okay to put your baby down in a safe place, like their crib, and step away for a few minutes to calm yourself. Never shake or hit a baby.
If you're worried about your baby's crying, call their doctor.
