Supporting Early Language Development
Your baby's coos and gurgles are the first steps toward talking. Babies learn to make sounds by copying the sounds they hear, which is why talking to your baby from birth matters so much.
Describe what's happening
"You're nuzzling my shirt. You're hungry! Okay, milk is coming." Your baby won't understand the words yet, but your caring tone helps them feel understood.
Copy each other
Imitate your baby's sounds and faces, and encourage them to copy you. Talk about what catches their eye.
Respond when they communicate
When your baby fusses, put it into words: "The wipes are cold, aren't they? We're almost done."
Sing and read
Your baby doesn't care if you're on key. They just love your voice. Books with big, bright pictures are great too.
