Using Gestures to Communicate
Before babies can talk, they use gestures like reaching, pointing, and waving to tell you what they want. Gestures help your baby feel understood and less frustrated.
Reaching
Your baby reaches for things they want or holds out their arms to be picked up. Always respond, even if you can't give them what they want, so they know you understood.
Pointing
Pointing is an important milestone by the first birthday. When your baby points, name what they see. Point things out to them too: "Look at the squirrel!"
Waving
Many babies start waving between 6 and 9 months. Wave back and say "hi" or "bye-bye."
Shaking and nodding
Model nodding "yes" and shaking "no" while saying the words. Even when you can't say yes, acknowledge what your baby is telling you.
If your baby isn't using gestures like pointing or waving by their first birthday, mention it to their doctor.
