Recovery After a Vaginal Delivery
Congratulations on your little one! Now that you've given birth, you may be wondering how to care for your body as it heals. Here are some tips that can help.
Ease the sting
If you have stitches or small tears, peeing can sting. Keep a squirt bottle (peri bottle) of warm water by the toilet and spray your bottom as you go.
Cool, then warm

Use ice packs in the first few days. Some moms make "padsicles" by spraying pads with witch hazel and freezing them. After that, try soaking in warm (not hot) water in the tub or a sitz bath, a small tub that fits on the toilet.
Sit comfortably
A soft cushion or pillow can take pressure off while you heal.
Prevent constipation
Drink plenty of water and eat high-fiber foods. Ask your doctor whether a stool softener or fiber supplement is right for you.
Call your provider right away if you soak through a pad in an hour or less, have a fever of 100.4 F or higher, or have pain that gets worse instead of better. If you're still sore after a few weeks, let them know.
