Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
At NurturePA, we embrace our responsibility to create a culture that is welcoming to everyone. We stand firm against racism, ableism, and inequality, and discrimination in any form is not tolerated within NurturePA.
We believe that inclusion and diversity are imperative for the parents in our community and those who support them. The vast majority of our enrolled parents state that they have a positive, trusting relationship with their peer supporter. Along with supporting parents, NurturePA focuses heavily on building trust and reciprocity in these relationships. When parents join our community, all are welcome. There are no screening criteria or income guidelines, and we are committed to ensuring our program is accessible to parents with disabilities.
We know that children thrive when they experience a stable relationship with at least one consistent, responsive, and trusted caregiver. While our focus has traditionally been on enhancing the relationship between moms and their young children, we understand that these parenting roles are not exclusive to female-identifying parents. We welcome and celebrate all gender identities, family dynamics, and abilities in our community, and we are happy and eager to support all parents — including those with physical, cognitive, sensory, or mental health disabilities — who identify as the primary caregiver and as a source of trusted, consistent nurturing of a child.
NurturePA screens parents for signs of possible postpartum mood and anxiety disorders (PMAD), which affect an estimated 15% of parents. Parents with disabilities face additional risk factors and barriers to support, and we are committed to meeting them where they are. It is critical that we continue to educate and bring awareness to postpartum depression, the daily challenges of parenthood, and the compounding factors faced by those in underserved communities. Addressing these factors will lead to better health outcomes for both parents and their children.
