Considering How to Feed Your Newborn
Breast milk has the right balance of nutrients for your baby and helps protect them from illness. Breastfeeding can also be hard, so it helps to have a plan. Formula feeding is a healthy option too. What matters most is that your baby is fed and nurtured.
Put it in your birth plan
Share your feeding wishes with your medical team so they can support you with tips and information.
Get help early
Nurses, doulas, and lactation consultants can help with positioning and latch. Skin-to-skin contact in the first hour after birth is a great start.
Know what to expect
Most newborns eat every 2 to 3 hours around the clock. Your baby will show you cues when they're hungry and when they're full.
Take care of yourself
Eat well, drink plenty of fluids, rest when you can, and ask for help when you need it.
