Safe Sleep for Babies
There's no guaranteed way to prevent SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), but you can make your baby's sleep much safer by following these guidelines every time, for every sleep, with every caregiver.
Back to sleep
Always place your baby on their back to sleep, for naps and at night, for the first year.
Keep the crib bare
Use a firm, flat mattress with a fitted sheet. No pillows, blankets, bumpers, or stuffed animals.
Share a room, not a bed
Keep your baby's crib or bassinet in your room, ideally for at least the first 6 months. Adult beds, couches, and armchairs aren't safe for babies to sleep on.
Other ways to lower the risk
Dress your baby in a sleep sack instead of loose blankets and don't let them overheat. Breastfeeding, offering a pacifier at sleep time once feeding is going well, keeping your baby's vaccines up to date, and a smoke-free home all help too.
